  • Dr Irene Fafaliou is Professor in Enterprises and Small & Medium Business Support Policies at the Economics Department of the University of Piraeus. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Leicester University (UK) and a graduate degree in Manpower Studies & Industrial Relations from the University of Manchester (UK). She received her Bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki (GR). She has extensive teaching experience at universities in Greece and abroad. She has also large experience in e-learning and distance learning life-long educational programs. From 2013 to 2015 she served as a module coordinator of Business Administration at the Hellenic Open University. Currently she also acts as the Director of the Entrepreneurship, Technology and Economic Strategy Laboratory which aims to design and implement innovative and creative actions in the field of entrepreneurship, technology and business strategy through collaborations with institutions in Greece and abroad. Much of her research is focused on the links between firms and markets, the competitiveness of the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, on Social & Innovative Entrepreneurship, and on Strategic Innovation Management and Technology Transfer. She has worked as a technical consultant with various institutions and as a researcher has contributed to the elaboration of a large number of studies, funded by the European Observatory for SMEs, the European Union, and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, the National Institute of Labour, the National Confederation of Greek Commerce etc. 

    Her work has been published in a number of leading referred journals including International Business Review, the Journal of Economic Asymmetries, the Journal of High Technology Management Research, Productions Planning and Control Journal, International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development, Journal of Economics and Finance, Internation Advances in Economic Research, International Journal of Economics and Business Research, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, International Journal of Social Economics, Marine Policy Journal, International Journal of Value-based Management, International Journal of Economic Research, Global Business & Economic Anthology et alia.

    She is the author and editor of a number of books related to Industrial Organization, Industrial Policies, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Entrepreneurship. She has numerous publications in Greek and international collective volumes and in proceedings of international conferences. She is on the Board of the non-profit Organization ‘Future Leaders’, member of the National Board for the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) and founding member of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit of the University of Piraeus. She is also member of the Business Mentors Network and mentor for startup firms in the Ekinisi Lab of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises and Industries (SEV) and in the Blue Growth Piraeus Initiative.
