Dear students,

On behalf of the staff of the Department of Statistics and Insurance Science of the University of Piraeus, I wish to welcome you all to the new academic year, extend special congratulations to the first-year students of the Department for their admission to the University of Piraeus, and wish everyone a productive academic year.

The Department of Statistics and Insurance Science was founded and began operating under the name Department of Statistics during the academic year 1977–78, and has been operating under its current name since the academic year 1984–85. The mission of the Department is to provide both theoretical education and practical training in the fields of Statistics and Insurance Science. Through teaching and research, we aim to train scientists who, using advanced mathematical methods—primarily from the field of Probability Theory, but also methods from other sciences—will be able, among other things, to assess business and insurance risks, analyze qualitative and quantitative data from any scientific discipline (Biomedical, Geophysical, Economic and Social Sciences, Engineering, Data Science, etc.), build statistical models for decision-making and drawing conclusions, conduct demographic studies to understand population phenomena, design insurance or pension schemes, and manage financial issues in the Insurance Sector.

The Undergraduate Program of Studies (UPS) of the Department is aimed at students who wish to pursue careers as executives in private and public enterprises, insurance organizations, and research centers, in roles such as statisticians, actuaries, analysts and risk assessors, investment analysts, etc. Furthermore, they may continue with postgraduate and doctoral studies. The Department offers two high-level Master’s programs: one in Applied Statistics with four possible specializations (Biostatistics, Statistical Methods in Finance, Statistical Quality Control, and Statistical Methods in Data Science), and one in Actuarial Science and Risk Management, intended primarily for those who aspire to become actuaries and managers of insurance and/or financial risks.

I would like to assure you that the Department’s staff (both academic and administrative) is, and will remain, at your disposal throughout your studies, to guide and advise you at every step of your academic journey.
