Dr. Maria Virvou

Maria Virvou is an Associate Professor at the Department of
Informatics, University of Piraeus in Greece. She received a degree in
Mathematics from the University of Athens, Greece, a M.Sc. degree in Computer
Science from the University College London, UK and a D.Phil. degree from the University of Sussex,
UK
(1993). Her D.Phil was funded by the Greek Foundation of State Scholarships.
She has been a member of Faculty at the
Department of Informatics, University
of Piraeus since 1994
when she was first elected as a lecturer. She was elected an Assistant
Professor in 1999 and has been elected an Associate Professor since 2004. Her
research interests are in the areas of user modelling , human computer
interaction, knowledge-based software engineering, artificial intelligence in
education, adaptive systems, e-commerce, interactive TV, affective computing. She
is Director of the Software Engineering Lab at the Department of Informatics.
She is also Director of the M.Sc. Conversion Course in “Informatics” offered by
her Department. She teaches several undergraduate courses: Software
Engineering, Object Oriented Analysis and Design, Human Computer Interaction,
Computers in Education, Compilers, Computer Assisted Software Engineering
Tools. She also teaches 6 post-graduate courses. She has supervised over 100
fourth year student project-dissertations. Moreover she has supervised 4 Ph.D.
students who have successfully completed their respective Ph.D.s. She is
currently supervising 7 Ph.D. students. She has published over 140 articles in
international journals, books and conferences. A lot of these papers have been
cited by many researchers and have been included in the short lists of the most
downloaded papers of the respective journals where they have been published. She has served as the project leader and/or project member in over 10
R&D projects. Finally, she has
served as a member of program committees of many international conferences and
has been a reviewer in many conferences and journals. In the year 2008 she is
the General co-chair in the international conferences: 1. Joint conference on
Knowledge-Based Software Engineering (JCKBSE 2008). 2. KES
Intelligent Interactive Multimedia Systems and Services (KES IIMSS 2008). In the year 2003-2004 she received the first research award from the
Research Center of her University as the member of faculty (among 200
colleagues of hers) having the highest number of research publications in high
quality research journals.
