The maritime industry is in all respect a globalized industry, and thus in order to analyze the activities taking place within it we should take a worldwide perspective. The recording of marine accidents is made on a regional basis by the national Flag Registries and on a worldwide basis by certain organizations such as Lloyd’s. However the form and the content of those records do not allow an in depth statistical analysis.
Since its foundation in 1994 the Laboratory of Marine Accidents of the University of Piraeus records all accidents worldwide in such a form that allows their analysis and the identification of the factors that influence their creation.
The researchers of the Laboratory have published extensively in international conferences and scientific Journals.
Marine Accidents Database
It is widely accepted that in order to promote the safety of the “Maritime System” the accidents of the system must be analyzed. This analysis requires the creation of a database for all accident and not just those that turned into a total loss. The marine accidents database is the foundation for the scientific analysis and the extraction of conclusions in order to cover the subject as widely as possible and with a cross-scientific perspective.
The Laboratory of Marine Accidents aims to focus on a multi-disciplinary approach in order to set the foundation for a “Common Incident Reporting System”.
Utilization of the Database – Benefits.
The Database has already been utilized by experts coming from a wide range of scientific fields such as Economics, Technical, Administration etc. Furthermore, the Database has already been used and is of great value to various organizations such as ship Registers,Port authorities,Marine Insurance companies, shipowners, Maritime and environmental Organizations. By using the Database these users are supported in their efforts to improve designs, prevent and manage the risk of accidents, calculate insurance risk and premia, monitor a vessel’s accident history etc.
